Smoke Signals is an album of unreleased recorded material from 2017. It features acoustic voice, (loosely) prepared piano and textural accompaniments by Sonya’s then-10 year old sister, Ella. The music can be described as non-programmatic free improvisation, culminating in an unplanned and surprisingly narrative work.

Holowell is father-daughter duo Sonya Holowell (vocals) and Jonathan Holowell (piano). Their improvisations blend noir, filmic, modal and neoclassical genres. Their compositions are expressions of kinship through what they both perceive as ‘action painting’ with sound.
